Wednesday Wisdom: What You Need to Know About IGTV

Here's a quick update on everything you need to know about IGTV.

YouTube has a new challenger in the form of Instagram’s new video platform, IGTV. The new platform allows you to diversify the content you post on the network, so you have more opportunities to connect and engage with your audience.

IGTV, announced in June 2018, lets you upload vertical videos that are as long as 60 minutes. Similar to stories, you can still add text, emojis, and other features to your posts. What’s more, videos begin playing the moment you open IGTV, and you can sort through and search for different “channels” — each channel is an Instagram account you follow or is suggested for you to follow — while you’re still in the app.

There is a stand-alone IGTV app, but you can also access the video platform through Instagram.

Stories will still exist in its current form and will continue to allow short-form video content to post to the network.

Here’s How to Set Up and Use IGTV

Creating an IGTV channel is incredibly simple. To begin, click the IGTV icon in the top right-hand corner of the home screen. Then, click the wheel icon. You’ll see a few prompts to set-up your channel, and then you’re done.

IGTV allows for slickly produced content, but that doesn’t mean that you have to run out and create a big-budget video. Instagram continues to be a platform to develop authentic connections with your community.

Use the new platform as an opportunity to create valuable videos that are relevant to your audience. Test the length of your videos to see what drives engagement with your community, and increases your reach and adjust as needed.

What Does This Mean for Your YouTube Channel

Now that IGTV is here, don’t delete or neglect your YouTube presence. Think of IGTV as supplemental content to your video strategy across all channels.

When creating content for both be advised: IGTV allows users to search for videos by channel, not by content like YouTube does.  So continue to create content that you can tag with keywords that will help your audience easily find your content on YouTube.

As stated above, your IGTV channel will be discoverable by people that already follow you, or your channel will show in “Suggested for You” when a user searches other channels like yours. Create content that is relevant to your desired audience that will resonate with followers and possible pop up in those suggested searches.
