Featured Friday: Global Goals World Cup, Creating Global Citizenship Through Soccer

For this Featured Friday, we’re proud to profile Global Goals World Cup — a global soccer tournament created by EIR and the United Nations Development Programme.

GGWCUP is designed to empower women to become local activists, and to “merge true global citizenship with the game of soccer.” Each year, as many as eight female soccer players from around the world are chosen to be on 17 teams (representing each of the UN’s global goals, such as ending extreme poverty and fighting climate change) to play in the tournament.

The group uses its social channels, like  Twitter, to keep their worldwide membership up-to-date on GGWCUP news, their World Cup tournament, as well as humanitarian and women’s issues.

In addition to having a steady stream of relevant posts, they’ve also used their celebrity brand ambassadors, such a Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones, to create awareness for their organization.
